It Is Finished

As of now, I have put together all of the half-done or cut out quilts that have been languishing in my closet, and I have three quilt tops that need to be quilted. Tomorrow I’m changing the sheets so while I have the bed denuded I’ll spread out each of the tops on the mattress and take a picture so that you’d get a better idea of how they look.

And now I’m thinking about using up the extra strips I have for the Sunflower quilt and turning it into a queen top by adding a 1″ border in a coordinating orange between two 4″ borders. I am officially insane.

Yes, I’m feeling better today, thank you, so much so that I made kielbasa skillet for dinner. Granted, the amount I make requires the soup pot instead of a skillet but it means we have leftovers for the next day. Considering that the Brit absolutely adores this dish, leftovers are a good thing.

I also got down to brass tacks with the Sunflowers quilt and headed out to Joann Fabric and Crafts to take advantage of a doorbuster sale and pick up some fabric for the border since it was likely I’d be finishing it on Monday. I was going to get a yard and a half because that would be enough for 4.5″ strips if I pieced them together. I didn’t want any extra fabric because I’m trying to use up all of my fabric, not add more to the stash.

I wound up buying 2.33 yards of Honeycomb Floral because I changed my mind at the cutting table and decided to get two yards, at which point the lady said, “Oh, there’s only about a third left—I can sell it to you as a remnant.” I cut out the border strips and, yup, I now I have a buttload of this fabric left over. I’ll have to figure out something interesting to do with it.

I Am Not Well

And I’m pretty sure this is due to some hellacious allergens out there at the moment since other people in the metroplex are complaining and I’m not showing symptoms of anything else. I do feel completely wiped out, however, and the Brit said I was somewhat hot and not in the sexy way.

So basically I slept in, then when I did get up (because unless I am just this side of Death’s door I can’t stay in bed any longer than ten hours) I relaxed for the rest of the day while the Brit headed off to his D&D game. I didn’t even install the new piston in the main bathroom toilet yet. And yes, it’s called a piston—it’s a Kohler toilet with complicated flushing dingies but they laaaaaaast. The piston will literally take a minute to install, but I want a clear head to do this (and to not feel like passing out if I’m bent over for longer than thirty seconds).

I’m hoping that this will clear up by tomorrow because 1) I have stuff to do and 2) the weather for next week is literally going to go up and down thirty degrees over a handful of days, plus there will be A Lot of Rain. I would prefer it if my sinuses were behaving themselves while all that nonsense is going on.

As you know, Bob, 2023 is the Year of Finishing All the Projects. One of those projects was a quilt I wanted to make from thirty antique sunflower motifs I’d reclaimed from an old quilt I’d found in a j/u/n/k/ antique store. The circular motifs were originally sewn to curved sections of white cotton cloth that formed a square, but the white cotton had frayed so badly that the squares were falling apart.

I’d decided to carefully unpick the sunflower motifs from the cotton fabric, applique each motif directly onto a new white cotton square, then set the squares in a lattice of sunflower fabric and dark green squares. That was at least ten years ago and the pile of sunflower motifs still attached to their old surrounds and the cut-out lattice pieces have languished in a tote bag in my office closet for all that time.

But no more. This week I got down to the business of unpicking all the motifs and appliqueing them to white-on-white patterned squares (I like it better than plain white fabric). So far I have two rows completed with another six to go and a four inch border to add (still don’t know what the border fabric will look like but there’s some nice sunflower patterned fabric at JoAnn’s right now) and these old sunflowers will get a new shot at life in a full-sized quilt. Also, since they’re appliqued to new fabric they won’t be under the stress their old surrounds endured and should last fairly well once the top is done and quilted to the backing and batting.

I also found out that one of my local quilt shops offers time on a long-arm machine at an hourly rate, no previous experience needed. Guess who’s going to start quilting all of her finished big tops next month? *grin*

That Was Fast

Much to my surprise I got a text from the accountant this morning saying that the tax return was ready and I could go back out there to sign it and pay for the service. So I did, which completes my scheduled road trips out to the back of beyond.

Unsurprisingly our return was minimal (mainly due to the money we took out of the IRA for my knee surgery) but at least it was a return and pretty much covers the CPA fee so I’m grateful for small favors. Another writer I know said that she owes big time this year, so not going to complain.

In other news we have a medium-high pollen count here in the clavicle of Texas at the moment and one of the biggest offenders is cedar, which is absolutely kicking my ass. I was sitting here earlier trying to write and the screen was blurring so badly I had to go lie down and hope that my eyes would get it together long enough for me to get my word quota done. My sinuses are also aching and I need to puck up some more lotradine, which works for short periods for me.

The worst part, however, is the gummy head. I know I have a bunch of stuff to get finished this week, as well as a bunch of stuff that needs to be done over the weekend, and it feels like I’m trying to think with a saturated kitchen sink sponge. No bueno. On the upside, however, I got the rest of these sunflower motifs cut free from their surrounds (a LOT of work with a seam ripper) so I can finish this quilt top by next week, hopefully.

And the Taxes Are Off

I have just completed one of the two yearly scheduled road trips. Our accountant’s office is just a touch west of Arlington (the accountant was recommended to me by a friend when I used to work in Irving. They’re so good at what they do that we don’t want to switch to someone local), which means I have an hour and a half round trip to go out there, drop off our files, and come home.

And yes, they have a secure online server where I could upload scanned files (and I have a printer that is also a scanner and will work such arcane magic), but I like the drive. For one thing, the hillsides of the various highways are usually carpeted in bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush, and other wildflowers, which is always pretty, and even a short road trip is kind of fun for me.

This year, however, I got the taxes finished in record time (I usually get everything done in March) and the hillsides showed nary a bluebonnet as I drove down 181. Bit of a bummer, but there’s a nice field nearby that usually gets carpeted with bluebonnets and I can always get my fix when that blooms.

While in previous years we usually got some pretty tasty returns due to me having a small business and a home office, I’m hearing that the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2018 is going to adversely affect a lot of people for fiscal year 2022 so I’m not holding out hope for a big return. If we don’t owe anything, I’ll be happy with that.

Yes, I Know, It’s Valentine’s Day

To be honest, there were no grand romantic gestures here, but neither of us were in the mood for such gestures, nor do we need them. The Brit and I are ridiculously affectionate all year round so we don’t need an official day for those kind of activities. Also, flowers need to be put out of range of the J Crew which is problematic, and we already had chocolates. *shrug*

So today pretty much consisted of working, changing out J.J.’s peed-upon bedding, fetching Thai for dinner, and generally relaxing. We may go see Ant-Man: Quantumania this weekend, and we counted Sunday’s dinner at Lita’s as our dinner out so we did get some date night activities which was nice.

Mrgh. I got all of the numbers crunched for the taxes so as soon as we get Lyndon’s W2 I can fill out the accountant’s worksheet and run everything out to their office. Actually, I should have him log on and see if he can download a copy since we should have received it by now.

The fact that I’m getting all of this finished in February instead of my usual March or early April astounds me, frankly. I guess I’m serious about making 2023 run on rails.

In other news J.J. is still alive, still happy, and still peeing his bedding at least three times a day. We’ve also moved up to two sponge baths a day (mainly to clean his undercarriage and make sure he doesn’t develop any sores or irritation from the pee). He’s so lucky I love him.

How My Sundays Start

Last week I was talking with my sister and she asked me if we had ever considered downsizing since we have this big house for just the two of us, “And I don’t know how you manage to keep it clean.”

I laughed hollowly because, yes, I would love to downsize to a one-floor house with no pool. But outside of having to move for a job the only way I will ever be able to talk the Brit into downsizing is if we can find a place with enough back yard space to build a very, very large workshop so he can keep all of his stuff.

But that’s a matter for another day. When it comes to cleaning the house, I have to admit that I slack a lot of the time unless I know someone’s coming—it’s not filthy or a hoarder house by any means, but I don’t bother that much about dusting every day, and sometimes stuff can build up until I get a wild hair and decide to put everything away.

As of this year, however, I’ve started a Sunday morning ritual that has really stood me in good stead. Now, mind you, this won’t work if you have kids or someone waiting for you to get up but I figure there’s always kibble in the bowls so the cats won’t starve before I can make it downstairs.

Ever Sunday morning, before I leave the bedroom, I clean the master bathroom. We have a fairly large one with a separate little toilet cubicle so this is my cleaning plan:

  • Sweep the floors
  • Wipe down everything in the toilet cubicle with a damp cloth
  • Clean the toilet
  • Wipe down the counters/cabinets/tub/shower enclosure/windowsill
  • Use the old hand towels to polish the mirrors and dry off anything that’s still damp
  • Tie up the cubicle garbage bag and toss; put new bag in the bin
  • Empty the litterbox
  • Mop the floor (this is a major project because I wash and then rinse, so this is a once-a-month step and the rest of the time I spot clean)

It takes me about thirty minutes, and by the time I’m done the bathroom is sparkling and smells great. I’ve been doing this because for the longest time the master bath received the least attention because it’s one of the rooms only the Brit and I see and I had so many other rooms to clean, not to mention so much other stuff to do. But I finally got fed up with always having hair in the sink and toothpaste spatter on the mirrors so I instigated this ritual. It’s also why I’ve been organizing the bathroom drawers over the last few weeks, and why I’ll be doing something similar to the undersink cabinets in the near future. If nothing else, I will always have one room in my house that my female ancestors will approve of.

So now you know how I start my Sundays. And now if you’ll excuse me, I must go and do the taxes. Whee…

And a New Project Begins

Well, not exactly new—I’ve had this Mexican Holidays wall hanging top finished for months, and I’d even started quilting it until I noticed that the backing was crooked. Being the OCD crafter that I am, I ripped out all the seams, straightened the backing and resandwiched it with the batting and top, and basted it again.

As of last night I used stitch in the ditch to quilt any straight lines, stipple quilted the bulk of the border, freehand quilted the center motif, and I’ll be adding outlining, hearts, and vines to the other pieces of the quilt next week. I would say tomorrow, but tomorrow will be dedicated to putting together the tax paperwork for our accountant. I’ve already told the Brit that he’s taking me out to dinner afterwards and he’s driving because I will need a margarita by then. He said, “It’s a deal.” Smart man.

No, we’re not watching the Super Bowl. If the Bears aren’t playing I don’t care.

In other news I’m playing around with doing a serial book on Kindle Vella, but I would need a lot of lead time for that because I have so many Nicola books to finish first. Can’t promise anything, but it would most likely be some kind of caper romp in space. Because that’s just how I roll.
