Well, This Is Fun

Dallas got whacked with a bit of a winter storm as of yesterday, and today we woke up to this.

That’s not snow, by the way. That’s ice. Apparently we had freezing sleet come down this morning according to the Brit (even got thunder sleet in some areas of Collin County), and the back yard is currently a winter wonderland. I can hear the crows arguing out there and I’m tempted to toss out a batch of peanuts for them.

Luckily for us the power and heat has stayed on (not always a guarantee in Texas as we learned in February 2021) and the temps will slowly start going up tomorrow afternoon until we get rain and temps in the 40s on Thursday. A sunny day on Friday with temps in the 50s should clear away any last traces of ice. We’re stocked up with pretty much everything we need (although I wish I’d picked up more bread flour) so technically we don’t have to go out until Friday if we don’t want to.

In the meantime, I’ve got books to write and chicken curry Chelsea buns to make tonight, so I’m set.

And Now the Second Stage of Mourning: Making Stuff

I have no idea why, but today I was absolutely overwhelmed with the urge to make a cover for the food processor so that it coordinated with the cover for the stand mixer.

Which I didn’t show here, did I? I bought a little over a yard of prequilted fabric years ago for a knitting needle organizer, then during my Finish All the Projects planning I realized it would work much better as a stand mixer cover. Took a couple of tries to get it to fit just right (added a smaller back and took in a wedge at the top to fit that) but I’m quite pleased with it. And yes, I made the piping myself and designed the pattern.

Anyway, the food processor cover. As you may remember, I bought the fabric the same day I had the Code Brown at Joann Fabrics. It was impossible to find more fabric to match the stuff I used for the stand mixer cover (believe me, I tried) so I decided to go with a coordinating green floral to go with the kitchen’s white curtains with green leaves and purple grapes.

What that meant, however, was that I had to quilt the fabric myself. It was a little time consuming but no big deal—the underside is the same fabric I used for the piping and I used a basic diamond pattern for the quilting. At first I was afraid I’d have to quilt the entire yard and a half of fabric, then I had the brain wave of cutting out the front parts to size, layering them on batting and backing that was a little larger, quilting each piece individually, then trimming to size before sewing up the cover. It worked nicely and I didn’t have to wrestle a huge wad of fabric through my machine, which is always a plus.

And yes, I know this is a little extra but the covers keep the machines clean and ready for use at a moment’s notice instead of getting splashed with stuff when I’m washing dishes and slowly accumulating a layer of dust. I have a bunch of extra daisy fabric so I may make a cover for the blender as well. If this means I’m turning into my grandma, so be it.

Family Habits

So I found out that a family member died this morning (it was expected, the family member was surrounded by loved ones and had lived a good long life so while I’m sad this isn’t sudden or a tragedy). And all of a sudden I was hit with the strongest urge to clean. I mean, it’s like I have a voice in the back of my head saying, “Go clean. Go clean. Go clean.”

I don’t know if this is something buried in my epigenetics where you clean your house after someone dies so that you can have guests for the wake and funeral or what. But it’s gotten to the point where I’m about to go strip the bed, wash the bedding, and completely dust and vacuum our bedroom (already did the master bath this morning), then vacuum my office and what I can reach of the media room and the hallway outside our offices, then vacuum the downstairs because what the hell, why not.

There’s also a certain odor of cat pee downstairs that may also be driving this. I’ve already washed everything on the futon but the Brit and I are afraid that J.J. has taken to tinkling a couple of drops on the carpet every now and then, and other than shampooing the entire carpet the only way we can handle that is to find the damned UV flashlight, identify any spots, and hit them with My Pet Peed.

In any case I’m going to bow to the wishes of the ancestors and do a good solid clean of the place. If nothing else, we’ll sleep well tonight in beautifully clean bedding.

Well, That Was Fun…

The Brit had headed off for his weeky D&D game and I was sewing and listening to episodes of Pod is my Copilot, as you do, when Taylor mentioned the training he was doing for a 5K and how much walking he had been doing.

And suddenly I got the strongest urge to go for a walk. So I got up, put on my Skechers, plugged in my earbuds and walked around the block. Now, these are suburban blocks so they’re not quite as big as city blocks but they’re still sizeable and it took me eighteen minutes to make a full circult of the block.

Allow me to point out that when I was walking on the treadmill before the motor went boom I used to hang onto the handrails (because I’m still a little scared of falling and because I’m kind of lazy, don’t @ me). But yesterday was real world walking where I had to control my core and stand up straight as I strode along the extremely uneven sidewalk. And I did it. I was sweating by the time I got home and the muscles around my new knee were complaining like anything but by God I did it.

I want to get to the point where I can walk anywhere without limping or being exhausted or in pain. So if walking around the block every day will get me there, by God I’ll do it.

Heading Into the Weekend

And frankly it’s going to be two days of constant laundry due to the Ancient One, as much cleaning as I can stand, finishing three motifs for the Garden Paths quilt, and maybe finishing off Interview With the Vampire since it got put behind an AMC paywall and I’ll be damned if I’m paying for yet another streaming services so I just bought it.

The nice thing about that, however, is that I’m all caught up on The Serpent Queen and I have IWtV on iTunes so Monday morning I can finally gird my loins and cut the cable, which should save us about a hundred bucks a month. If I can make the switch over to T-Mobile’s 55+ plan for the Brit and myself as well, we’ll save another hundred a month, which these days would be very welcome.

Wish I could tell you about my weekends full of parties, wacky hijinks, and skydiving off of the Sears Tower, but this is my life now. Whee…

Started My Christmas Present

Since I’m Olde™ and really don’t need anything these days, it makes buying me presents for my birthday and Christmas somewhat challenging. If I can’t get some sort of an experience I try to make it easier on the Brit by finding something cute on Amazon and sending him a link. Last year, I got a really cool skull cup for my birthday, but I was kind of stumped for Christmas.

And then I saw it.

As you may remember, Bob, I’m a miniaturist from way back. And last year there was a huge craze for super cute book nook scenes that you could build and put on your bookshelf. So I thought, yes, this would be an appropriate Christmas gift for me.

So the Brit dutifully ordered it and wrapped it for Christmas, and I was delighted to open it Christmas morning. It was brought upstairs and sat there until yesterday when I was cleaning the bedroom and thought, “Hmm, I’d like to take a crafting break from the quilt. I should put this together.”

Dude. Dude. First off, the kit was of very nice quality and comes with almost everything you need, including glue, paint, and an eensy paintbrush. The instructions, which appear to have been translated from Chinese, are a little dodgy here and there (the glue was labeled as “latex” and I was using my own glue until the light dawned halfway through the kit, and it keeps saying to paint the “frames” of a piece where it should be “edges”) but the pictures are good enough to figure out what to do. It also helps that I’ve been building miniature kits for over 45 years.

The only problem for me? The kit is roughly in 1/24 scale which means there are a buttload of tiny parts, including a lot of printed cardboard ones, and I have at least one cat who loves to chew on paper. This means I have to keep the office door closed, and it’s cold out here right now in north Dallas so without heat from the main house my office is more than a bit chilly. I’ve been wearing a cardigan and looking wistfully at my fingerless gloves but I can’t wear them while handling glue and paint.

So far I have the kit halfway constructed (and it has a COOL lighting system where an induction pad connected to the hidden battery box is screwed behind the little stepped wooden piece at the bottom of the front. I was wondering why they’d printed the On symbol on a piece of wood, but if you turn on the battery box and touch the symbol with your finger it turns on the lights. I so could have used this tech 14 years ago when I was building the Nevermore shadow box, but now that I know it exists I will be using it on the book nooks I’m going to create from scratch, tra la.

Anyway, pics are incoming once I finish the kit. And figure out where to place it, of course.

So We May Get a Little Snow…

Apparently someone asked the Bodacious Brit this morning on a business call if Dallas was handling the snow well. “What snow?” he asked, bewildered. It’s raining here today, yes, and the temperature is starting to drop, but the only snow we’ll see are a couple of possible flurries between 7 and 9 PM before the precipitation stops. And it’s going to be 48°F tomorrow, and the ground is too warm for anything to accumulate anyway so we’re fine.

Parts of Arkansas, on the other hand, are supposed to get whacked by Snowmageddon today. I’ve got family up in Mountain Home who are looking at a possible 9 inches of heavy, wet stuff, which is problematic because one family member requires home care and this will make that challenging. So for all of you in Arkansas, I hope that you’re all stocked up and staying home warm, dry, and safe.

As for me, I made two store runs this morning, took Jessie to the vet for her shots, then went back to the store for additional items for dinner (shepherd’s pie, perfect for the weather and it gives us lunch for tomorrow). Grandma here is now inside for the rest of the night, tra la.

So, About That Podcast…

I thought I’d give you a little more background on the plans  I mentioned in yesterday’s post. So as you know, Bob, I took off the week between Christmas and New Year and quilted my little heart out while listening to old episodes of my favorite podcast Pod is My Copilot (personal journal podcast that features three friends who have precious little boundaries, will talk about anything, and have frequently made me laugh so hard that I almost peed).

And it got me to thinking. From 2007 to 2015 I produced a podcast called Don’t Quit Your Day Job. Originally it was supposed to be a writing podcast starring my friend Jerry and myself where we talked about science fiction and fantasy (this was before I started writing romance). Jerry had to step away for a couple of weeks right at the beginning so I drafted my best friend Patrick in as guest host, and he worked so well that he joined the show permanently once Jerry came back. Then I recruited my sister Stacy to be our news girl, and Stacy and Patrick together are some of the most hilarious people in the world, especially when they can pick on me.

So for about eight years we had a really good, funny show whose topics ranged all over the place from writing to acting to the Sad Bastard Bake Sale where we tried to find a boyfriend for Patrick (with some side trips such as my multiple flights to LA in 2009 to see Jeffrey Combs in his one-man play Nevermore. What can I say, I’m a fan). Unfortunately Stacy had to drop out after awhile due to lack of time, and then our remaining schedules got so complicated that it was really difficult to get everyone on Skype long enough to record. So we made a dignified last show in 2015 and that was the end of it.

Or so I thought. Because as I was listening to the PiMC eps and hearing them call out DQYDJ and add little asides to me, I pulled up old episodes of our show and listened to those and my God, we were funny. I also realized that I missed podcasting and hanging out with Jerry, Patrick, and Stacy. Since circumstances have changed significantly for all of us in the intervening eight years I thought I’d float the idea of maybe doing a monthly podcast with the usual suspects.

First person I asked was Stacy. I said, “So, I’ve been listening to old eps of DQYDJ and I was wondering—”

“Yes.”

“Uh, okay.” Turned out that with all of her kids out of the house she now has more than enough time to record, and if we wander off into adult topics (which we did a lot) she doesn’t have to worry about mentally scarring her offspring.

Next up was Patrick, who I thought was going to be a tough nut to crack. Turns out he was totally up for it and said that he would pull out all of his recording equipment and make sure it was functioning.

Finally, I asked Jerry, who is incredibly busy at the moment with his own media empire and a number of other podcasts. To my shock he also said yes, adding that he’s at a point in his life where he really wants to be back on DQYDJ.

TL;dr: I will be starting a new podcast in February called Don’t Quit Your Day Job: Second Shift (we may change that part, I don’t know yet). What I do know is that we’ll start off talking about writing in various genres, acting, and life in our assorted locations before the topics start wandering into weird, profane, and hilarious territory.

And somewhere, Jeffrey Combs just shuddered and doesn’t know why. Heh, heh, heh…

Because I Have So Much Free Time…

So I’ve been listening to old episodes of Pod is My Copilot for the last six weeks or so while they were on hiatus for the holiday (they just dropped a new ep tonight, whee!) and just for giggles I went through my iTunes and found episodes of the podcast I did with my BFF Patrick, my friend Jerry, and my sister Stacy.

My God, we were funny. We had the Don’t Quit Your Day Job Players and did skits all the time, Stacy was our newsgirl and would write news flashes for us, and we had a lot of cool people on as guests. Which got me to thinking that maybe, just maybe, if all the stars align and I can talk the usual suspects into it, we might be able to do DQYDJ: The Next Generation.

Must think on this some more…
