Happy May Day!

And a most blessed Beltane to everyone who celebrates.

As for me, I’m plowing ahead with all of Nicola’s writing plans and grabbing time at the jewelry bench whenever I can, in between trying to keep the house tidy and trying not to worry every time I look at social media. Luckily I can have long talks with Lyndon and I always feel a bit better after that.

The ironic thing is, we could hit the lottery tomorrow and have more than enough money to keep us comfortable until death and protect our families, and I’d still be worrying about climate change, the health of trans and gay kids in the US, everyone in Ukraine, and all the other crap going on around the world. My friend Ann Mayburn posted this on her FB:

A grandmother speaking about the future; “I am terrified for my children… but I’m simultaneously wanting to experience grandchildren. I don’t know how to share that with them.’ It was simultaneous hope and fear.

I have found the word that describes my feelings on climate change. It’s a new word, invented by a pair of ladies who try to invent ways to express ourselves in this ever evolving world. They turned to Italian, combining the word nonna (grandmother) and paura (fear): nonnapaura. A word describing the fear of not for yourself, but for your grandchildren and the world they will have to survive in.

Anyone else have nonnapaura?

I know I do.

My Newest Sparkly: Moonrise

Got the dendritic quartz with moonstone cabochons set in sterling silver with a handmade bail, and even I’m surprised at how well this turned out. A friend said that it looks Art Deco-ish, and Lyndon says that it looks futuristic. I added the texture on the back plate with a very small ball burr for some visual interest (and to kinda make it look like the surface of the moon), and with the offset jump ring and bail it hangs straight on a chain.

And if you’re interested in buying this little beauty, it’s $60 with S&H within the US, and I can add an 18″ sterling chain for an additional $10 (I don’t automatically add chains to pendants because a lot of people prefer to switch out chains on the pendants they already own).

How Melanie Spent Her Saturday

In the garage on the bench, mainly. I have this pretty little triangular cab of dendritic quartz that looks like a moonrise over the limb of a planet, so I’m going to set it in sterling with three 5mm moonstone cabs along the lowest side. I think it’s going to be really cool and kind of mid-century astro-futuristic, if that’s a thing, when it’s done.

Once that’s done I have a laundry list of pieces to make:

  • a fossilized coral and citrine pendant
  • a set of garnet earrings
  • a plume quartz cloud pendant
  • a set of chrysoprase earrings
  • a set of faceted carnelian earrings
  • remake my larimar and aquamarine pendant

I also have amber and red tiger’s eye cabs to turn into earrings, then once I’m well and truly back into the swing of making jewelry I’m going to build single gallery settings (single-layer circles or ovals with prongs soldered on to hold a gem) for five flower-carved labradorite cabs and link them to form the bracelet from Shadow of the Swan. That one is for me because it would cost at least $200 if I wanted to sell it.

Once I’m comfortable with fabricating gallery settings, I’m going to practice making double gallery settings, then start setting some of the faceted stones I have. I have a beautiful lab-created spinel and ruby, a natural moldavite, and two amethysts that I’d like to turn into earrings.

So yeah, between this and writing the Nicola stories I’m gonna be rather busy for the next couple of months.

I Can See the Floor!

As part of Operation Finish All The Projects in 2023, I have been tackling the craft room over the last few weeks and working on cleaning/organizing it to the best of my ability. The original plan was that Lyndon and I would use it for our respective crafts, but over the years it has turned into a store room for various computer bits and pieces and a place where he would work on his vintage computers. There are so many computer cases, monitors, keyboards, boxes of circuit boards, et al piled in there that I couldn’t get to my dollhouse table or my storage shelving units.

Until today. I intend to keep working on it when Himself is off playing D&D, but I got the bulk of the stuff off the floor and I now have access to my table and two of my shelving units with partial access to a third. Plus I vacuumed and shampooed the carpet, which was desperately needed.

My dream is to completely organize everything so that all of our respective materials/equipment are clearly labeled and easily accessible. Which may be a pipe dream with the Collector of Old Computer Bits but I’ll do what I can.

Ironically, while doing this I found some really pretty pieces of pale lavender and gold jacquard fabric which I apparently wanted to turn into a jacket, judging from the cut-out pattern in the same bag. Interestingly enough it’s the same pattern that I modified the sleeve for, so I’m going to make the modifications to the front and back I’d planned on making back in February, then put together a muslin and see if it works. If it does, I’ll make the jacket. The interesting thing will be finishing the sleeves, since I don’t exactly have enough material for them. What I can do, however, is cut out blocks of both fabrics, arrange them on some lightwight fusible web, fuse everything together, then cover the joins with decorative stitching. Hey, this jacket is already going to be particolored so I may as well go full harlequin with the sleeves while I’m at it.

Musing About A Story

There’s a short story I want to take a crack at writing this weekend (if I can find the time between working on the Nicola WIPs, doing promo, cleaning, making jewelry, and keeping the J Crew entertained). I have the shape of it in my head, and I think I have the chops to pull it off. We’ll see—if nothing else, my writer’s group will be happy that I’m finally submitting something for them to crit.

There is just so much on my plate at the moment. I’m juggling being an indie author with all the hats I have to wear in that business, a jewelry designer (don’t judge—my sterling silver jewelry brings in decent money and it gives me a break from the writing), and managing everything in the house and, yeah, it can be a challenge at times.

But I could also be stuck in an office job that I loathed and dealing with a micromanaging boss. So I’m looking on the bright side here and reminding myself to schedule a little free time in between everything else.

Speaking of the jewelry, I now have a placeholder page here where I’ll be putting new pieces as I get them. If I’m correct I can add a Buy Now button to each piece that will take people to PayPal where they can purchase the piece with their PP account or a credit card. At some point I’ll probably want to look at PayHip or one of the assorted storefront apps so that I can sell jewelry and signed books, but that will be at some point down the line.

New Sparklies!

Since I shut down my Etsy store I really do need to set up a section here for Belaurient Arts where I can sell jewelry. In any case I finished setting the stones, cleaning up the bezels, and polishing the pendants today. Considering that I haven’t done any bench work for at least a year I’m really pleased with how these turned out.

The rutilated quartz on the left is for a giveaway Nicola will be running this weekend (this kind of quartz has a starring role in one of the most recent releases so I thought making a pendant out of it would be a nice giveaway prize). The giveaway will be open to anyone who joins Nicola’s reader group on FB (The Cameron Club) or subscribes to her newsletter, so if you want a crack at winning this piece feel free to join either or both groups.

To my surprise the polished ammonite pendant has already been sold. I’d originally made it for myself, but when I posted these pics on FB a friend said, “Ooh, can you make me one?” Since I’m pretty sure I can pick up more of these ammonite slices I decided to sell this pendant to her.

The ornate spoon end set with peridots is one of those super Boho pieces that has a deliciously funky feel to it. Or maybe that’s just the weight of the thing—this piece has some serious heft to it. The pendant is available for $35, and a sterling chain in your choice of length is $10 extra.

So, yeah, the bench is now rechristened and ready to go. I’m going to take a crack at making some garnet and silver earrings next, and I want to go back to making some of my Victorian settings again with all of the scrollwork and curliques. It’s a PITA to do but the result is so incredibly pretty.

This Feels So Weird

So today I mailed off the throw quilts that I was commissioned to make, only to realize that I haven’t been working on any sort of crafty stuff since then. I mean, yeah, I cleaned off my jewelry bench and sorted through the various jewelry projects, but that was it. I haven’t really made anything since 4/13.

That simply wouldn’t do. So I marched out to the garage and got started on three pendants. The first one is the rutilated quartz cab I mentioned earlier—I decided to set that with some pretty gallery bezel wire and an open back so that light could come through the cab.

The second pendant is a wee slice of polished ammonite fossil much like the one pictured above that’s been sitting on the bench for quite a while. And while I managed to get the bezel and backing soldered together for that I had a stone bitch of a time attaching a jump ring for the bail. A lot of jewelers will put the setting upright in a third hand or reverse action soldering tweezers, add a dot of solder to the correct spot on the setting, then try to get it to melt while holding the jump ring in position so that the solder will connect it to the setting.

Yeah, ruined a good five jump rings trying that. Then I remembered that I used to do it by laying the backing flat on my ceramic heat block and butting the jump ring up against it with a chip of solder over the join. That worked a treat.

The third pendant is also a patiently waiting project where I sawed off the handle tip of an ornate solid sterling spoon in order to turn it into a pendant set with tiny peridot cabs. Making the super tiny bezels was an adventure and a half but I managed to get those fabricated as well. By the end of the night I had three pendant findings put together, tumbled, and ready for setting and polishing. Not bad if I do say so myself.

I’m Using Fire Again

Today dawned bloody marvelous so I fed the J Crew, did the usual Sweeping of the Floors, racked up 30 minutes on the treadmill, cleared some old bottles out of the fridge and took out the recycling, and now I’m putting together some chapters for Kindle Vella, whee!

But more importantly, I got my bench set up again so that I can start making jewelry. I just bought a pointed oval rutilated quartz cabochon like the one in the picture. I’m going to turn it into a pendant and use it as a giveaway (rutilated quartz has a featured role in Nicola’s A Theory of Crystal). But I have to get back into practice first so I’ll work on setting some pending pendants before I take a crack at this one.

Also paid the estimated taxes and the household bills, so I’m feeling good right now!

Nearing the Finish Line

After a very, VERY long day of sewing I have the entirety of Throw Quilt #2 quilted. I didn’t intend to use the quilting pattern I wound up using, but once I saw how it was turning out I realized it was perfect. Hopefully the recipient will enjoy this quilt as much as I do (and I still wanna make a full-sized one for myself).

In other news the J Crew have been mightily entertained by the murder of crows that have been hanging out on our front lawn. I must admit, I may have been scattering peanuts here and there, ahem. But they’re here, they’re having a great time sunning themselves on the lawn, and the cats are rapt, I tell you. I had Jeremy, Jasmine, and Jemma all lined up in front of the library window this afternoon peering out at the feathered guests and clearly thinking, “I could take one of those, yeah. Just let me out the door, Mom, I’ll bring you back some dinner.”

Sorry, my darlings. Crows are off-limits, plus our back yard is proof that there are raptors out there capable of taking down fair-sized animals, and while the twins may be too big for a hawk I’d be worried for Jaz. Not to mention the coyotes and bobcats in the neighborhood. The J Crew will just have to keep dreaming about taking down a back yard wildebeest.

Crap, It’s Monday. Again.

Closing in on finishing Throw Quilt #2—I’ve got it sandwiched and basted, and now I just have to get it quilted which should only take two days or so. With any lucky I’ll have that done and the edges bound by Wednesday night, then I can get both quilts in the mail to their new owner.

In the meantime I’m also trying to get various writing projects done, I keep looking at our desolate back yard and want to get bags of dirt spread on the hard clay in order to promote some grass growth, and I continue to get various long-standing tasks tackled around here—namely, I finally hit the window seat cushion from my office with My Pet Peed (I can only assume Jasmine got trapped on it by Jeremy and she fear pees, so it’s been sitting in the garage for the last couple of months until I could get some MPP). Once that did its job I took the cushion out to the back yard and gave it a good wash. It’s currently drying in the sun, and when that’s finished I’ll sew on some buttons that have fallen off and reinstall it in my office window. I may even take another crack at installing the blinds for that window, now that I can stand for long periods of time without wanting to cut off my right knee.

I may only be inching ahead when it comes to cleaning this place and getting it organized, but I am inching. Any forward progress is a win.
